My observations about the Top 20 radio stations in Germany

State with the most radio stations:
  • Bayern (78)
States with the fewest:
  • Bremen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (6 each)
Before looking into German radio stations, I thought they would be pretty similar to radio stations here.  With globalization, it seems many countries are beginning to be quite similar.

After taking a look through the types of radio stations offered, it seemed like they were pretty  similar to what we have here.  However, one difference I noticed was the amount of techno stations.  In my perspective, it doesn't seem like there are so many techno stations here.  Techno is also the main music in 4 of the stations on the list of the Top 20 in Germany, one of those being 5th all-around with another following close behind at 6th over-all.

The interest the German people have in regards to what is played on the radio seems quite similar to what we have.  In conclusion, I think the German army is pretty similar to the American radio media.

Are Mass Media more globalized than the people who consume them?
  • No, I do not think so.  It seems like the Mass Media try to focus on one are in their reporting.  They don't get a broad arrangement of areas.  For example, when I was living in Finland, I heard a lot of news about America but not much about the other countries.  However, on the other hand, it sometimes feel like people are only as globalized as what they see in the media.  I think they're mostly equal.  The few people who have traveled a lot may be a little more globalized than the media.
What does it mean when patterns across the Western globe are so similar?
  • You can see the effects of globalization on the world as the patterns become more and more similar.  Maybe someday we'll have the whole world with a similar culture.  Which, in my opinion, would be sad.  Cultures are so interesting! How can we learn about them if it's all the same?
Where do cultural differences "survive" if media do not carry them - or do they?
  • Those traditions and culture can maybe be kept in the homes, if the parents work hard at keeping them.  Although, with how much influence the media has today in directing our lives, it might be impossible.
What can you say about radio in Germany?
  • The radio in Germany seems quite similar to American radio.  The Germans may enjoy it for more purposes than listening to music (listening to the news, etc.), but in general it is pretty similar.
